Hearing Dose and Perceptions of Hearing and Singing Effort Among University Choir Singers in Varied Rehearsal and Performance Settings

چکیده
This collective case study documented university choral students’ (N = 4) hearing doses, acquired through Etymotic Personal Noise Dosimeters (ER200D), as they rehearsed and performed a program of opera choruses during five time periods in three venues. Acquisition periods included one choir only rehearsal, two choir-orchestra-soloist rehearsals, and two public performances with choirorchestra-soloists. Participants also responded to a brief survey that solicited their perceptions of hearing and singing voice status immediately following each acquisition period. Among primary results: (a) three of four participants acquired sound doses in one or more of these approximately one-hour time periods that exceeded National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommendations for eight hours; (b) the soprano participant acquired the highest Leq dB(A) readings; (c) acquired sound doses varied according to context; and (d) participant surveys indicated that although these singers perceived slightly more than desired hearing and singing effort in one or more of the acquisition periods, they may not have been fully aware of the cumulative sound doses they acquired. Results were discussed in terms of recommendations for future research and hearing conservation awareness among choral conductors and teachers.

Long-time average spectrum characteristics of different choirs in different rooms
Long-time average spectra (LTAS) were made of a boys' choir, a youth choir and an adult choir, singing in a large church, a basement room and a rehearsal hall. The effects of room acoustics, vocal effort, musical material and choir type on the LTAS were evaluated. Large spectrum effects were caused directly by differences in room absorption. Such differences also induced compensatory changes in...
متن کاملAcoustical factors related to pitch precision in choir singing
Choirs seem to exhibit varying proficiency of intonation (meaning the overall degree of precision in pitch) under differing acoustic conditions. If so, which conditions are the most conducive to correct intonation? Amateur male choir singers were asked to sing (one at a time) just intervals from a synthetic vowel tone whose spectrum arrd vibrato content were varied. The standard deviation in fu...

Following an extensive survey of choral practitioners which gathered evidence of pitch drift in a cappella choral singing, a series of experiments has been undertaken with amateur choirs around the United Kingdom. For each choir, data was collected over twenty rehearsals by a member of the choir using equipment supplied by the Open University. The data collected includes recordings of a special...

The choir singer has two acoustic sipals to attend to: fhe sound of his or her own voice (feedback), and the sound of fhe rest of fhe choir (reference). The balance in loudness between feedback and reference is governed mainly by the room acousfics. While earlier experimenfs have shown fhat singers have a fairly large tolerance for imbalance, wifh references ranging from -23 dB to +5 dB, experi...

Multitrack recordings of a mixed adult choir with 23 singers were collected in order to investigate the influence of varied room acoustical conditions on a choir’s performance with regard to intonation, loudness, tempo, and timing precision. Headset microphones were used to record each chorister separately while the collected sound of all singers was presented via headphones exerting acoustic s...
